The Monolithic Design Evolution of the Leica SL Cameras: 2015-2025

Yes it's been almost ten years since the launch of the original Leica SL Typ 601 in October of 2015. This lens mount first appeared on the Audi design Leica T and introduced as the T-mount, then the TL-mount, and now the L-mount. Who could have predicted that Leica, Panasonic, Sigma, Black Magic, DJI, ASTRO, Samyang and other manufacturers would join forces to build a modern universal autofocus lens mount. In honour of the L-Mount's ten year anniversary, as well as Leica's 100 year anniversary of making cameras, I thought I would make a dedicated video talking about the design evolution of the SL camera bodies. For me there was no point talking about the internal specifications of the cameras. You can easily look that up yourself. What's more interesting to me are the design choices made with each consecutive model. I had the privilege of speaking with various people at Leica over the years, and so I've included their thoughts on the Leica SL design language. Moreover, although all three generations of SL cameras have unique design features that I love, my favourite Leica SL from a design perspective is the previous generation SL2. It has the right balance of function, form, and build quality. The SL3 is more functional while the original SL has a simpler monolithic form; but the SL2 has the right balance of both form and function.
