UK DIGITAL DANCEHALL MIX Peter Bouncer - Ready For The Dancehall Tonight Kenny Knots - Run Come Call Me Jack Wilson & Demon Rockers - Chuck It Mikey Murka - Back Your Automatic Richie Davis - Lean Boot Kenny Knots - Watch How The People Dancing Errol Bellot - What A Wonderful Feeling Kenny Knots - Ring My Number The Casio MT-40 featured a built-in bassline known internally as the “rock” preset, which, paired with its recommended 1/16-note fill, became the foundation of the groundbreaking 1985 reggae track “Under Me Sleng Teng.” That riddim inspired nearly 500 versions and is widely credited with shifting reggae from fully analog production to digital instrumentation and sequencing. This transition later influenced hip-hop as well, which—like reggae—remained largely analog until the mid-1980s. Because of its lasting effects, the MT-40’s “rock” preset has become a subject of intense interest and discussion. The preset was composed in 1980 by Hiroko Okuda, a newly hired music engineer at Casio. Okuda had been tasked with creating several preset rhythms, including the “rock” pattern. Before joining Casio, she completed one of Japan’s first graduate theses on reggae and had immersed herself deeply in the genre, even attending multiple concerts during Bob Marley’s only visit to Japan. She did not learn that her preset had sparked an international musical shift until 1986, when she read an article titled “The Sleng Teng Flood” in Japan’s Music Magazine, describing the surge of Jamaican tracks built from a Casiotone keyboard rhythm.
