Discover the Caravaggio Centre at St John’s Co-Cathedral in Malta, inaugurated in 2024, an immersive space dedicated to the life, art, and legacy of one of history’s most revolutionary painters, Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. Located within the very church that houses two of Caravaggio’s masterpieces, the centre offers visitors an interactive, audio-visual experience exploring the artist’s dramatic life, radical techniques, and lasting influence on Western art. The project was co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund and is overseen by the St John’s Co-Cathedral Foundation, in collaboration with the Government of Malta and the Archdiocese of Malta. Caravaggio’s time in Malta was as turbulent as his life elsewhere. After fleeing Italy following a fatal brawl, he was inducted as a knight under Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt, only to be later imprisoned, expelled from the Order, and forced to escape to Sicily. Despite this, his artistic legacy in Malta remains unparalleled. The centre highlights: The Beheading of St John the Baptist – Caravaggio’s largest painting and the only work he ever signed St Jerome Writing, painted during his Maltese period A life-sized projection of The Beheading Meet Caravaggio, an audio-visual narrative exploring his life, art, and time in Malta During the inauguration, Archbishop Charles Scicluna emphasised that Caravaggio’s art goes beyond aesthetics, confronting humanity with the realities of good and evil, power and injustice, drawing parallels with today’s global conflicts. The Caravaggio Centre invites visitors not only to admire artistic genius, but also to reflect on its powerful and timeless message. 🔔 Don’t forget to: 👍 Like the video 💬 Share your thoughts in the comments 📌 Subscribe for more content on art, history, and Maltese heritage #Caravaggio #StJohnsCoCathedral caravaggio caravaggio malta caravaggio centre st john’s co-cathedral st john’s co-cathedral malta beheading of st john the baptist st jerome writing caravaggio paintings#ArtHistory #CaravaggioCentre #EuropeanHeritage #BeheadingOfStJohn #CulturalHeritage
