This majestic Thirteenth Century palace was built to host the Capitano del Popolo (Chief of the People), an important political figure next to the consuls and the Podesta'. He was the representative of people and arts. His palace was equipped with a large meeting room for popular assembles, enlightened by the wonderful trifora windows. Later the building was also a temporary site for the Podesta', before several structural changes. In the Seventeenth Century, one floor was converted to a theater. The way it appears today is the result of a major renovation during the end of the Nineteenth Century by Paolo Zampi. Its transformation into a well-equipped and technologically advanced congress center is dated 1989. These two last renovations revealed the ruins of an Etruscan temple and some pieces of a medieval aqueduct.
