They generally argue this by saying that they have a 1-time fee and you keep 100% of your earnings. This is somewhat misleading because Distrokid actually keeps 20% of your Youtube money. Now, if you decided not to collect money from youtube for some insane reason, then it's a factual statement and you keep 100% of your earnings. So technically the key is within their wording, specifically, earnings vs royalties. Earnings would include youtube money whereas royalties are aimed at music platforms and streams. Then there's another potential issue with rap and hip hop artists not being able to collect any Youtube money at all.
