The Viali di Circonvallazione di Bologna (known in the city simply as "the Viali"), are an uninterrupted succession of avenues with 3 lanes in each direction that surrounds the city center in a ring. They are one of the main arterial roads of the city, with a total length of 8 kilometers. The avenues retrace externally the previous walls of the fourteenth century,crossing the 13 access gates, of which today only 9 remain (as one was closed in 1445 and then completely incorporated into a church, 2 were demolished in 1903 and one is located completely within the path of the ancient walls compared to that of the current avenues).These gates today constitute the main intersections of the avenues and the points where they stood today have the names in the format Piazza di Porta and the name of the door, except for the squares of Porta Galliera and Lame, which take the names respectively of "Piazza XX Settembre" and "Piazza VII Novembre 1944".The avenues in their function of passage from one part of the city to another, avoiding the historic center, now a limited traffic area, today are often replaced by the outer ring road of the ring road.
