Located within Dumfries and Galloway, and around 15 miles east, and slightly south, of Dumfries is the town of Annan. Geographically, Annan is situated along the eastern bank of the namesake River Annan - a tributary of the Solway Firth. A settlement developed here from around the 12th century, bolstered by the construction of a castle on the river. This castle, along with the town itself, changed hands between the Scottish and English on multiple occasions during the Wars of Scottish Independence. The castle was eventually abandoned, with no visible remains surviving. In 1538 King James V made Annan a royal burgh. Historic industries associated with the town include wool, cotton, fishing and shipbuilding. Its proximity to the Solway Firth made it an ideal spot for the construction of vessels, reaching a peak around the 19th century, but ultimately declining during the early 20th century. In 1848 the railway arrived in Annan courtesy of the Glasgow, Dumfries and Carlisle Railway. The station of today is situated on the Glasgow South Western Line which runs between Carlisle and Glasgow. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
