Schizophrenia Film Festival

In a time where many individuals and organisations are increasing their efforts to understand and support people dealing with mental health challenges, the disorder schizophrenia is still widely misrepresented and stigmatised, and is still often portrayed very negatively in Hollywood films and TV. These public misconceptions can have extremely isolating, negative effects on the self-esteem and mental wellbeing of people with schizophrenia. Melbourne woman Heidi Everett, who has had schizophrenia herself for over 25 years, is making efforts to change this. For the past few years Heidi has been running the Mojo Film Festival – an annual event in which people with schizophrenia from all over Australia and the world are encouraged to make and submit short films that represent their own individual experiences of living with this complex disorder. For a change, people with lived experience of schizophrenia get to share their own stories in their own ways and have them screened publicly. The types of films submitted vary wildly – dramas, comedies, animations, music videos – which helps demonstrate the wide variety of ways people experience schizophrenia and how it affects their lives. Watch LIVE every Friday at 2pm and Sunday at 12 noon on Channel 7 or catch up on the episode at https://www.houseofwellness.com.au/tv
