Breathlessness in term or near term newborn babies is not uncommon. Although their lungs may be behaving like immature lungs, the more common cause is fluid-filled lungs, as the babies are floating in the amniotic fluid in the uterus. This condition is called TTN. This is more common in babies born by LSCS (Caesarian section). These babies need care in NICU, warmth, oxygen, and close observation. Generally, the breathing normalizes in 6-12 hours. Once stable, other functions such as feeding, temperature maintenance are stabilized. Occasionally, if the breathlessness persists beyond this time, other reasons such as HMD, infection, pneumonia are suspected. This is explained in detail by Dr. Nitesh Agarwal and this treatment is regularly offered at Southern Gem Hospitals, Hyderabad.
