Maarjamäe is a district in Tallinn by the Gulf of Finland. Almost a hundred years ago, it was agreed that houses would not be built there and that the area would remain for public use. Over the years, several important facilities have been located there. The oldest is the Orlov (Maarjamäe) castle from 1874, where the Estonian History Museum is located today. In 1941, a German military cemetery was established there. The Soviet military cemetery is also located there from the same time period. Starting in the 1960s, a memorial was built there, which (fortunately) was not completed and is in a rather bad condition today. In 2018, a memorial to the victims of communism was opened there, where more than 22 thousand names have been entered. This last one is the focus of this video for various reasons.
