Pediciidae, also known as hairy-eyed craneflies, is a family of flies belonging to the order Diptera. They are closely related to true crane flies and comprise approximately 500 species worldwide [2]. These flies are characterized by their medium to large size, ranging from 5 millimeters (0.20 inches) to 35 millimeters (1.4 inches) in length, depending on the species. They have long and slender wings, legs, and abdomen. Some distinguishing features of Pediciidae include their pubescent or hairy eyes, with short erect hairs present between the eye facets. Unlike some related families, the eyes of Pediciidae are usually not glabrous. The antenna of these flies consist of 12 to 17 segments, and the thorax has a V-shaped transverse suture. The wings of Pediciidae display contrasting brown longitudinal stripes. Additionally, these flies lack ocelli, and their wings have two anal veins. The apical crossveins and M-Cu form an oblique line. The fossil record of the Pediciidae family dates back to the Jurassic period, making them one of the oldest families of flies known [2]. Some notable genera within the Pediciidae family include Dicranota, Heterangaeus, Malaisemyia, Nasiternella, Nipponomyia, Ornithodes, Pedicia, Savchenkoiana, Tricyphona in the subfamily Pediciinae, and Ula in the subfamily Ulinae. Pediciidae flies are commonly found in various habitats around the world. They share similarities in appearance with Tipulidae, another family of flies, often referred to as true crane flies. However, Pediciidae can be distinguished from Tipulidae based on their characteristic eye structure and other morphological features.
