The WWF were legitimately coming under a lot of pressure over Goldust since the gimmick debuted in late 1995, and Vince Russo claimed that the character had to get taken off TV following the work Dustin put in shortly after his stint as "The Artist Formely Known as Goldust". Following the demise of Goldust, the WWF used Dustin's real-life beliefs as the driving force behind his new character. Dustin couldn't just be himself (like he did back in WCW) and instead Dustin preached to fans about everything that was wrong with the WWF programming. This was short-lived, as a quick rivalry with Val Venis would see Goldust make his return just a few months later.
