The concert was recorded at Île Thélème on February 18, 2023. The ensemble presented a cutting-edge program for an a cappella quartet. Music of the 21st century enters into a conceptual dialogue with the 16th century—specifically with its most refined forms: the madrigal and the motet. The program included Dmitry Kourliandski’s transcription of one of the most famous madrigals about a dying swan, Il bianco e dolce cigno by Jacob Arcadelt. Olga Raeva’s cycle Russian Poems, set to texts by poets ranging from Pushkin to Kushner, recreates a vivid panorama of genres within Russian vocal music—from the partesny concerto and lyrical folk song to the Russian romance. Vladimir Rannev’s cantata Belarusian Songs, based on poems by Konstantin Steshik, consists of subtle and piercing images of human suffering and resilience, relevant to any century. Finally, Air–Air by Vladimir Gorlinsky and works by Alexey Sysoev on Old English texts by Ezra Pound are written in an exquisite polyphonic motet form—true Renaissance music dressed in postmodern attire. N’CAGED is a refined, concept-driven vocal ensemble that is fascinating to follow. Its soloists—both collectively and individually—form a kind of “perfect instrument,” capable of recreating the sound worlds of vastly different eras and styles, from the origins of the Baroque to ultra-contemporary vocal music. This is precisely why academic composers are so eager to write works specifically for the ensemble. Program: Olga Raeva — Russian Poems. 8 pieces on texts by Russian poets for a cappella quartet. Vladimir Rannev — Belarusian Songs on poems by Konstantin Steshik. Vladimir Gorlinsky — Air–Air. Motet. Alexey Sysoev — Songs from a cycle on poems by E. Pound. Dmitry Kourliandski — Il bianco e dolce cigno. _____________ Our website: https://ile-theleme.com Follow us: VK — https://vk.com/iletheleme Telegram — https://t.me/ile_theleme Instagram — / ile_theleme Facebook — / iletheleme
