An Interview with Fatma Alloo Interviewed by Anneth Meena Fatma Alloo was born in Zanzibar in 19…is a social movement activist, and journalist committed for social change; She believes in the use of all forms of media and cultural spaces as a mobilizing tool in advocacy and conscious raising for social changes. In the early 80’s, Alloo worked as a journalist with Daily News in Dar es salaam, Tanzania. She has had vast experiences internationally as a journalist she was sent to Uganda during the war as a radio producer. She has worked internationally in mid-eighties, in Geneva, Switzerland and worked with Women Documentation Centre called ISIS-WICCE also, worked in Amsterdam, Netherlands with a Women’s Reproductive Rights Organization. Fatma Alloo is the co-founder of the feminist advocacy group Tanzania Media Women’s Association (TAMWA) in 1987. She is a co-founder, currently a vice president and board member of the Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF) in 1997. She unpacks how women used the media and cultural spaces for social mobilization and shifting patriarchal norms, particularly in periods where they were marginalized from state power. She is also a founding member of Zanzibar Women on the Net (ZaWoN), and founder of FEMNET. In addition, a founder of Non-Government Organization Resource Centre (NGORC) based in Zanzibar. She is presently working with Civil Society Foundation based in Dar es Salaam Alloo is a producer and co-producer of several documentaries and films including Safari (A Journey) and Yalivyo (what it is) are doc drama based on true-life stories of women which have been shown at the Berlin Film Festival. She is an associate producer of Tanzanian feature film Maangamizi (extermination). She has won several awards including MNET award in 19991 and ZEZE award in 20092 from Tanzania Trust for Culture. Alloo is a coordinator of several institutions including resident faculty of International Honor's Program (IHP) from Bard College, Harvard University. Boston, U.S.A 91998 – to date) based in Tanzania. Moreover, she is coordinating Development of Alternative Women’s Network (DAWN) East African. And she is the Africa Coordinator of Gender Evaluation Methodology (GEM) with Women’s Network Support Program of Association for Progressive Communications (WNSP-APC) and the Africa Association of Research Foundation (ARRF). She is an advisor to the Post-Colonialisms Today project, which is housed at Regions Refocus. She is currently serving in several committees and board including the Commonwealth Foundation’s Civil Society Advisory Committee based in London. And IDRC Connectivity Africa/CATIA Advisory Committee. UNCSAC-U.N.Civil Society Advisory Board – Chairperson in Tanzania. Vice Chairperson of FEMNET – a communication network based in Nairobi. Also board member of the Africa Association of Research Foundation (ARRF) based in Nairobi. Director on Aga Khan Education Services (AKES) board. She is currently a freelance consultant.
