“The evolution of drug education in America” Since the 1960’s, drug education for teens has stressed complete abstinence. Admonitions have very often contained false claims and exaggerations about marijuana, coupled with zero tolerance policies that have resulted in a generation of young people of color thrown into the criminal justice system. Despite this punitive approach, teens continue to use marijuana. But with the cultural, sociological, and political landscape changing rapidly, and the move toward legalization, drug education has had to evolve, morphing into a harm reduction approach stressing trust worthy, science-based education. The old “just say no” is rapidly becoming “just say know.” Author of Safety First: A Reality-Based Approach to Teens and Drugs, and can be found in numerous languages and downloaded at www.safety1st.org or www.drugpolicy.org. Marsha Rosenbaum, PhD, is a consultant and founder of the Safety First drug education project at the Drug Policy Alliance. Booksmith, San Francisco CA, April 19, 2016
