As soon as patrons step through the doors of the ‘Born This Way’ bar, better known as BTW, one of the owners, Gina Wuestmann, greets them. Within five minutes of chatting with Wuestmann, she’s either offering you a free shot or telling you how she and her husband opened their bar on the eve of the shutdown during the peak of the pandemic. Customers are always curious and always ask why Wuestmann and her husband David, a straight couple, decided to open up a safe space dedicated to the LGBTQ plus community? David Wuestmann, Gina’s husband, is asked this question daily, and his response is always the same. “Gina and I are allies of the community, and we both felt that this was an underserved community,” said David Wuestmann. “There was not too many places on Long Island where people can be themselves. This was just our cause and our mission. We’re here to provide space to people who want to be themselves.” Gina Wuestmann has been in the bar business for over 30 years, and many of her loyal customers expressed wanting to have space where they can feel comfortable in their skin. “As far as a big gay bar scene on Long Island, not really not at all,” said Ricardo Rodríguez, who sat at the bar with his fiancée while Gina gave the both of them a big congratulatory hug on their engagement. “You can count gays bars on one hand that’s it. As far as Gina being a straight ally, I don’t even want to use the word ally; I want to use the word friend because honestly, she is doing a blessing.” Gina Wuestmann loves when she connects with her customers, who thank her for providing them with this space. However, Gina is still in awe that her bar, something she loves to do and would be doing, anyway is giving back to the LGBTQ plus community as more than just a hangout spot, but a space where all are welcomed to come and be who they want to be.
