As a young gal I would often purchases box dye in an attempt to lighten my dark hair at home. I learned a thing or two from that experience: 1) all hair colors that lighten, including box dye, contains bleach (peroxide is a form of bleach as well) and 2) it is damn hard to lighten dark hair at home! When you go to a professional they almost always use bleach to lighten dark hair. I refused to attempt that at home (I saw enough crazy YouTube videos to convince that was not the move) and instead went to Sally Beauty and opted for Loreal Hicolor in Natural Blonde. Mayday, mayday: this does contain bleach! Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. The results: lighter hair, not natural blonde or any blonde. I went from a Level 2 hair color to a Level 6 with a redish tone. That's because of the following: dark hair has natural red undertones the only thing that can lighten dark hair to blonde is bleach My goal was indeed a blonde color, alas, it is a light brown with caramel highlights thanks to my balayage. I also ended up getting a cute haircut from my stylist. All in all, I love my new hair color! It wasn't what I wanted but it's exactly what I needed!
