Former Director-General of ASIO Dennis Richardson says any global investigation into the origins of the coronavirus and the response from China should be a learning process, and not "be about putting China on the mat". Mr Richardson said he doesn't think this was the approach the Australian government will be taking, as there are specific objectives it wants to achieve which will require "very boring but essential quiet diplomacy". "We won't achieve our objectives through megaphone diplomacy". In recent weeks, China - primarily through its Ambassador to Australia Jingye Cheng - has bristled at Australia's call for an independent global investigation into the origins of the virus. The Ambassador first threatened a potential consumer boycott on Australian exports, and then on Tuesday leaked a private conversation with Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Frances Adamson. Mr Richardson told Sky News host Chris Kenny although Australia is not as outwardly patriotic as other nations, "if we're threatened we're a pretty determined country". "That is not the way you win friends and influence in this country". "Australia is not a country that's going to be intimidated by threats of that kind".
