Western superstar Randolph Scott’s CORONER CREEK is an exceptional movie that was filmed in color around the spectacular area of Sedona, Arizona. Born to wealth, and raised in Virginia, Scott become one of the most popular western film stars of all time. If you ever had any doubts, this film shows why. It’s one of his best. Of course, Randolph Scott starred in many non-western films in the 1930s and mid-40s, but after seeing the success of a string of westerns he made with veteran producer Harry Joe Brown, Scott formed a production company and starred in nothing but westerns from 1948 on, the year this film was made. Scott shows his strength as an actor with his portrayal of a man obsessed with revenge. It’s a fine performance, on the same level as his later work with Budd Boetticher and Burt Kennedy in the 1950s. Those were classic western tales and so is this. CORONER CREEK has a complex script that’s based on the western novel by prolific author Luke Short. Randolph Scott is a loner going against a strong-willed villain, a terrific George Macready, whose hired guns include Forrest Tucker, Joe Sawyer and Douglas Fowley. Others in the cast include Marguerite Chapman, Edgar Buchanan, Wallace Ford, Sally Eilers, and William Bishop. You won’t see his face, but stuntman and future star Jock Mahoney can be glimpsed doubling Scott, Macready and Tucker in some amazing feats of derring-do. Yep, Jocko doubled all three! This beautifully done western was directed by Ray Enright, who began his career with Mack Sennett as an editor and directed some of Hollywood’s biggest stars in the 1930s and 40s, including Bogart, Fonda and Flynn, and John Wayne, battling Randolph Scott, over Marlene Dietrich in the 1942 version of THE SPOILERS.
