Since the beginning of 2021 I've been running Shinko Tires on my 250 Two-stroke enduro and my 350 dual-sport. Today I'm going to take a few minutes to discuss the 6 different dirtbike tires I've used this season and compare them to my previous experience. Listen along while I navigate through the maze of trails at Dayton Dirt Riders. Per my comments in the video, I've now run the 216MX front for over 46 hours, including 10 harescrambles. I've run this tire in both 90/100-21 and 90/90-21. The 90/90 is a great tire, but I prefer the "Fatty" front tire as it doesn't deflect off rocks and roots as much, and ultimately doesn't feel as "twitchy" as the standard front. The 520 Dual-Compound rear tire was a real eye-opener. I was shocked by the power the 520 put to the ground in rocky and loamy soil. On the flipside, locally we have a great deal of clay. The clay bakes in the sun all summer, and when it rains, it becomes a solid skating rink. Needless to say, I love them in the creek beds and on logs. However, dense clay is pretty typical for some of my riding areas in Kentucky, for that reason, I'm leaning away from the softer "gummy" tires for myself, but I think these are great solutions for many people. The 525 Hybrid Cheater had the best parts of the 520, with wider spaced knobs to adapt to the clay. The bite was similar, but so is the response in the hard wet clay. I want to try a standard compound 525 and see how I like it. The 504/505 standard compound tires game-changers on my Dual-Sport. The knobs are the densest of all the tires I've used this season. Meaning the 505 series can become "packed" with heavy mud or clay moreso than the previous tires, however, they were absolutely choice on the rugged jeep trails at Red River Scramble. They did a good job at the KXCR training facility ("The Holler") that same week but started to show their limitations when the clay got thick. I was really impressed with how confident the tires felt on the pavement (These are Off-Highway Use only tires), which is not what they're designed for, but also incredibly capable off-road including the sandy creeks of the Red River Gorge area. I'm looking forward to putting more miles on these tires. Going forward I want to try the 546 series tires and see how they combat the Miami River clay here in Dayton, and "The Holler" in Clay City, Kentucky (it's an aptly named town).
