In 2017, the AFC Cup underwent a major change in its format: Instead of 4 groups each for the east and west zones and then a round of 16, the teams would be paired geographically into groups and zones. Ceres, Global, JDT, Hanoi, and other teams in the vicinity were put in the ASEAN Zone. As newcomers to the AFC Cup having exited in the round of 16 the previous year, Ceres-Negros surprised everyone and came out on top of the ASEAN teams before bowing out to Tajikistan's FC Istiklol, with the help of quality players like Kota Kawase, Iain Ramsay, Fernando Rodriguez, and United City FC Stars Bienve Maranon, Stephan Schrock, and OJ Porteria.
