This location served as the backdrop for the fictional village of Ramgarh, central to the film’s narrative of vengeance, camaraderie, and action. The area’s dramatic landscape, characterized by rocky hills, ravines, and sparse vegetation, perfectly complemented the film’s intense action sequences and Western-inspired aesthetic, earning it the nickname “Sholay Hills.” The filmmakers constructed an entire township, including homes, streets, a temple, a mosque, and a marketplace, under the supervision of art director Ram Yedekar, transforming Ramanagara into Ramgarh. To facilitate access, a road was built from the Bangalore highway to the sets, and part of the area was temporarily called “Sippy Nagar” in honor of the director.Notable filming sites included Ramadevara Betta, where Gabbar Singh’s hideout scenes were shot, and the surrounding seven hills, which provided a stark, lawless ambiance for the dacoit’s den. The train robbery sequence, a highlight of the film, was filmed on the Bombay–Poona railway route near Panvel, taking over seven weeks to complete. Some indoor sets, like the prison, were recreated at Bombay’s Rajkamal Studio to match the natural lighting of the outdoor locations. The production, spanning two and a half years from October 1973, faced logistical challenges, including re-shoots and lighting issues, contributing to its high cost. Today, Ramanagara remains a tourist attraction, with “Sholay Rocks” and Gabbar’s cave drawing fans.
