Ultimate version of the 512 BB presented in 1976, the 512 BB LM surprises with its Formula 1 look. A bodyshell signed by Pininfarina that applies an exceptional aerodynamics and an inimitable look. In 1978, Ferrari began the official development of a racing version of the 512 BB. Four models in total will be extensively modified, adding wider wheel arches, a new spoiler, as well as rear wings of the Ferrari 312T2 F1. The power of the 12 flat was increased to 440 horsepower, while reducing the weight to about 1 200 kg. The four cars, called BB LM, were used by Charles Pozzi, Ecurie Francorchamps, and NART at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1978, but unfortunately no team could finish the race. After the failure of this first serie, Ferrari worked on the improvement of the BB LM with a second development program at the end of 1978. The Weber carburettors were replaced with a Bosh electronic fuel injection system that increased the total power to 470 horsepower. This injection system was also adapted for the 512 BBi in the production three years later. The pop-up headlights were replaced by classic headlights integrated into the bodywork, while the tail was lengthened to the maximum of what was allowed by the regulations. Nine of these "new" BB LM were built by Ferrari in 1979, as well as sixteen others between 1980 and 1982. The best results of the BB LM were the fifth place overall and the first in the GTX category at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1981. The chassis (35523) presented here at the Monza Historic in the Classic Endurance Racing 2 category took part in the 1981 24 Hours of Le Mans, with Simon Phillips, his first owner, as well as Mike Salmon and Steve Earle at the wheel. Unfortunately, at 1:58 am, the car was forced to abandon the race following a transmission failure, when it was 19th. Fun fact : there has been a lot of speculation about who (or what) the "Sheila Wong Chong" is, inscribed on the nose of the car. It would be the name of the wife of Simon Phillips, his first owner, who participated in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1981 with the chassis 35523 as mentioned above.
