Canadian folksinger Jesse Ferguson performs Jim McLean's lament, "The Massacre of Glencoe." The song is based on a historical massacre in 1692, in the highlands of Scotland. It's been over a decade since my first YouTube recording of this one, and that one was on my homemade mountain dulcimer. The cold Canadian winters often bring this song to my mind. Ferguson, Dec. 2013) Chorus: G C G Oh, cruel is the snow that sweeps Glencoe G D D7 and covers the grave o' Donald. G C G And cruel was the foe that raped Glencoe C D G and murdered the house o' MacDonald. V1. G C G They came in a blizzard; we offered them heat, D G D warm clothes for their backs, dry shoes for their feet. G C G Em We wined them and dined them; they ate of our meat, C D G and they slept in the house O' MacDonald. Chorus V2. They came from Fort William with murder mind; the Campbells had orders, King William had signed. Put all to the sword—these words underlined— and leave none alive called MacDonald. Chorus V3. They came in the night when the men were asleep, this band of Argyles, through snow soft and deep. Like murdering foxes, among helpless sheep they slaughtered the house o' MacDonald. Chorus V4. Some died in their beds at the hands of the foe; some fled in the night, and were lost in the snow. Some lived to accuse him, that struck the first blow, but gone was the house of MacDonald. Chorus
