Jamie Holcombe, Chief Information Officer, U.S. Patent & Trademark Office Session theme quote is, "You manage things; you lead people." - RADM Grace Hopper. The overall objective for Session 2 is to develop an understanding of the differences between leadership and management and why they are both essential to organizational success. As Bill Toti has noted, "I know many managers who failed because they couldn't lead but I have known far too many charismatic leaders who failed because they didn't know how to manage." He is so right. The teaching points are: 1) develop an understanding of the interrelationship between leadership and management - a "2 sides of the same coin" approach. Picture a "venn diagram" and show the elements that differ and more importantly the elements they have in common; and, 2) why this is so important to understand and execute. The small group exercise is a collaborative effort to develop and then share 2 lists: "As the leader of a well-led organization I measure success by . . ." and, "As the manager of a well managed organization I measure success by . . . " The emphasis is on identifying behavioral metrics for each role and finding the common ground (the middle of the venn diagram).
