Hawker Britton co-founder Bruce Hawker has joined Sky News Australia to discuss the recent military exercise China conducted in the Tasman Sea. People's Liberation Army ships, which had been patrolling waters 340 nautical miles (about 630 kilometres) off Eden on the New South Wales south coast, stopped travelling and issued a warning about live fire drills. That led Airservices Australia - responsible for overseeing air safety in the region - to issue an alert to commercial aircraft travelling through to be cautious, with at least one plane reportedly directly warned to avoid the area by the Chinese military. According to Hawker, the Australian Navy's involvement in joint manoeuvres with US and New Zealand navies in the South China Sea earlier this month may have contributed to the current tensions. “You have to look at this with some perspective, the Australian Navy was involved in manoeuvres with the US Navy and the New Zealand Navy just this month in the South China Sea, about the 5th and 6th of February ... I think you've got to look at everything that happens in the context of our position around this and the fact that we spend a lot of time up in their part of the world,’ said Mr Hawker. “And I don't think it's any real surprise that they would do a manoeuvre, which really is in international waters between New Zealand and Australia,” he explained. When asked if he believed China's military exercise in the Tasman Sea was a bit of a “tit for tat” move, Hawker agreed.
