🛡️ Building a Roman Gladiator Shield (Scutum for a Provocator) ⚔️ Hey everyone! In this video, I’m building a Provocator Scutum, a Roman gladiator shield, completely by hand! 💪 The shield measures 80x65 cm and is made from three 4 mm poplar boards, glued together with Geistlig wood glue and bent over a form I built from an old euro-pallet. I used ratchet straps to keep everything in shape while it dried for 24 hours. Once dry, I covered both sides with cotton canvas, added a soft cowhide leather rim (secured with nails 🪛), and attached a brass umbo (shield boss) in the center. The handle and dowels are made of fir wood 🌲- shaped, sanded, and glued for a sturdy grip. Here’s how I made it step by step: 1️⃣ Taped and cut the boards to shape using a jigsaw. 2️⃣ Marked the center and cut out the hand opening with a homemade compass. 3️⃣ Glued the boards together and bent them over the form. 4️⃣ Let it dry and then covered both sides with fabric. 5️⃣ Crafted and fitted the wooden handle. 6️⃣ Drilled holes and fixed the handle with glued dowels. 7️⃣ Added the brass umbo and finished it off with a leather rim.
