This video is a school assignment for my course at Yellowhead Tribal College, IGOV305: Indigenous Political Thought and Resurgence. Duncan Campbell Scott was a renowned poet from Ottawa, his work considered some of the pioneering pieces in Canadian literature. However, he was also the Minister of Indian Affairs in the early 20th century, and had a hand in the creation and implementation of the racist and destructive residential school system in Canada. Today, we must ask ourselves if we are able to separate the art from the artist, to appreciate and even celebrate his poetry despite his work in assimilating the Indigenous population and causing generations of trauma, as well as the deaths of many Indigenous children. Also, there is another debate surrounding Scott and others like him: Do we "justify" their actions simply because this is "how it was" back then, or do we retroactively prosecute his behaviour through our history books? These are tough debates to navigate through, but ones that should be discussed. Some footage used in this video is from the video "Canadians Have Been Breaking Their Promises to Indigenous People" (2020), from the CBC Docs YouTube channel. The poem at the end of the video is Scott's "On the Way to the Mission," which was provided by the Speaking of Literature YouTube channel. All other references are provided near the end of the video. Song: "Rain Dance" by The Zuni (provided by Canva).
