(11 Oct 1996) Serbo-Croat/Nat War crimes investigators working 100 feet (33 metres) below ground are continuing to uncover bodies buried in mass graves in Bosnia. So far, they've discovered 15 mass grave sites in the region around Kljuc , about 90 miles northwest of Sarajevo. It's estimated that up to one-thousand five-hundred victims, mostly civilians, are buried there. It's believed most of the bodies were thrown into mass graves here in Laniste, in northwest Bosnia from May to July 1992. Excavation of the site began at the start of October. Judge Adil Dragonovic, who's leading the investigation into war crimes in this region, believes about 200 bodies are buried in this mass grave alone. So far they've discovered 75 bodies. This mass grave is a natural cavity about 33 metres deep. Bodies were first found here 13 metres down. The victims in this cavity at Laniste are from the village of Donji Biljani about 7 miles (10 kilometres) from the village of Kljuc. According to Judge Draganovic all the males are from the village of Donji Biljanji. The Bosnian Muslims were ordered by the Serbs, who then controlled the area, to come to the local school to pick up documents. When they arrived there, they were lined-up and shot. He says some of the skulls show signs of having been cut off, after they victims were shot. It's horrifying work for those who have to excavate these sites on a daily basis. SOUNDBITE: (Serbo-Croat) " We are now about 15 metres deep. The working conditions are awful. Everything is full of bodies. There are bodies all around. The cavity is about 3 by 2 metres wide down there. Bodies are in various positions: turned upside down, I don't know, it's hard, it's hard, I can't, I can't explain how hard and difficult it is. We've been excavating in two shifts today, one shift found 12 bodies and now the other one is coming out. I'm not sure how many have been found exactly, about 12 probably, that's 24 bodies today" SUPER CAPTION: Ismet Dizdarevic, Worker The body bags are lined-up side by side. These ones contain the bodies that have been found in one piece. All partial remains are collected to be separately identified later. For the Doctors attempting to identify the bodies, it seems a never ending task. Dozens of locals are still looking for their relatives. This seventy year old lady recognises the shirt of a man she knew. SOUNDBITE: (Serbo-Croat) " And I recognized Ismet as well. This is his checkered, mottled shirt. Ismet Jukic. This is his mottled shirt. He was taken away. The day before he was taken away he was at my doorstep, in Sanica. You see, this is his shirt...this is Ismet Jukic." SUPER CAPTION: Saura Konjevic, Local villager For many families offering a proper burial to their relatives and friends is the first step in trying to rebuild their lives.
