It is present only in the development of the urinary and reproductive organs. (Differentiation) Male: • upper region: urinary bladder • pelvic region: prostatic and membranous parts of urethra, prostate, bulbourethral gland (Cowper's glands) • phallic region: spongy (bulbar) part of urethra, urethral glands (Littre's glands) Female: • urethra • vagina The urogenital sinus and genital tubercle give rise to the external genitalia in both sexes. (Anomaly) • urogenital sinus anomaly: A birth defect in women where the urethra and vagina both open into a common channel. • persistent cloaca: A disorder where the rectum, vagina, and urinary tract meet and fuse, creating a cloaca, a single common channel.
