With its decking is in need of major repair, the pier which opened in 1860 is the oldest of its kind in the country and is also the second-longest pier in Britain. Sefton Council is expected to approve £206,053 of spending so the ‘Southport Pier Decking Project’ repair works can be undertaken. The entirety of the decking will need to be replaced according to the report and if approved it will be installed in serval phases over the next few years. I wanted to capture it as it stands before work is to be started. Enjoy. The Grade II listed Pier is the oldest iron pier in the country, standing now for over 150 years. At the end of Southport Pier will give you views across the North West to Blackpool and even the North Wales coast. The 1,000 metre long Pier is the second longest in the country with magnificent views. You can grab a cup of tea in the pier pavilion at the end of the pier or ride the train back and forth on the purpose built rail tracks that span the entire length of the pier! The pier today is an open structure, with modern railings on an older base and a deck made of hardwood slats, affording a partial view of the sea below. Along the walkway are name plaques that local people funded to help towards raising the restoration funds. The modern pavilion structure at the pier head was designed by Liverpool architects Shed KM and cost £1.2 million; the building houses a cafeteria with airport style floor to ceiling windows overlooking the beach and a collection of vintage mechanical amusement machines and penny arcade. And if you are looking for more tradition, Silcocks Funland at the pier entrance has plenty of amusements including the famous ‘Golden Gallopers’ carousel on the pier forecourt. There's entertainment indoors and you can also grab traditional fish and chips - after all we are beside the seaside! Southport hosts annually a long list of celebrated events such as the Southport Airshow, The British Musical Fireworks Championships, many food and drink festivals and the Southport Flower Show.
