A 20 year old young man, whom we will refer to as Paul. and his accomplice, whom we will call Dan, were venting their frustrations in destructive ways. The two young men had decided to steal a vehicle for some joyriding. Now Paul and Dan were not the most sophisticated of criminals. They undoubtedly aspired to reach the upper echelons of criminality by turning their experience into a position in upper government. But for now, their exploits were limited to pedalling their way around town on their bicycles and committing nuisance crimes. The young men pedalled down the town streets and spotted a vehicle that seemed to be beckoning to them. They rode their Schwin’s near the truck and peered inside. As in many small towns, the owner’s felt at ease enough to leave their keys on the seat of the vehicle. Opportunistically, the young men immediately began opening the door just as the town police officer pulled up behind the truck. Now realizing the jig was up, the young men jumped on their bikes and began pedalling as if their freedom depended on it, because it did. With the police in hot pursuit of the brazen bikers they headed toward the area where the park rangers had the massive grizzly cornered. Paul pedalled powerfully past the roadblocks and ignored the pleading officers calling for him to stop. He was so focused on eluding the cops that he didn’t understand that he was headed into a life changing encounter with the Monster of Whiskey Creek. Having pedally his way into a little separation from the pursuing police, Paul ditched his bike and began running down a trail into the forest. Back at the roadblock police officers discussed their options with park rangers on how to catch Paul. Their conversation was disrupted by panicked screams coming from the forest. They immediately knew where Paul was and what he was likely experiencing. The rangers had placed a snare trap in the area and baited it with a dead beaver, which is a great lure for any bear with taste. After mauling Paul severely the bear had apparently left him bleeding and suffering to enjoy some of the beaver carcass. As it sniffed its way toward the rotting beaver the giant bear stepped right into a steel cable snare, and secured its fate. A short time after hearing Paul’s cries for help park rangers heard an earth shaking roar coming from the location of the snare they had placed. Grabbing their firearms they made their way to the bait using the bear's growls and roars to hone in on its location. About thirty yards from the bear they could see the giant dark silhouette struggling against the cable snare. It was furious at their trick and dashed toward the rangers only to be pulled back as it swatted at them from a safe distance. The rangers knew that this was their chance to take the bear out and with several blasts of their high powered rifles they ended its future potential to harm anyone else. Upon approaching the grizzly they marvelly at the size and coloration of the bear. It was much darker than other grizzlies in the area, leading them to wonder if the bear had travelled here from another habitat searching for food. Its size was impressive and terrifying at the same time. A voice from headquarters crackled over the radio and instructed the rangers to rally at a point closer to a main road. The operator indicated that the bear would be transported there, so the rangers headed out. Within a few minutes the familiar sound of a helicopter broke the quiet of the forest. The massive grizzly was tethered by its head and one hind leg by steel cables and flown to the rally point. As for Paul, he survived the confrontation with the grizzly though he suffered serious injuries. Following the attack Paul could testify that the bear wasn’t guarding an animal carcass cached nearby, nor was it defending cubs.Speaking of cubs, our cub tier membership on Patreon, linked below will give you ad-free early access to our episodes and the $3 per month goes a long way in helping me continue to produce educational and entertaining content like this.Pictures of the bears carcass being flown to the rally point are posted there for your review. Upon examining the grizzly rangers determined that it weighed 761 pounds and had paws the size of a man’s head. If the grizzly had been able to find a normal supply of berries, it likely would have topped the scales at somewhere around 1,000 pounds.
