This strategic position enabled the Confederacy to block Union transit up and down the river. From Admiral Farragut’s effort to pass the Confederate batteries to the town’s surrender on July 9, 1863, this river bastion’s capture is an excellent example of how the North’s superior resources proved the Anaconda Plan a success.
