An informal solo performance of a Chuanju (川剧, Sichuan opera) aria, played on a rare and distinctive local variety of huqin (胡琴, vertical fiddle) called gaibanzi (盖板子) or Chuanhu (川胡), which is used as a primary accompanying instrument in the tradition of Chuanju (川剧, Sichuan opera) from Sichuan province (四川省), southwest China, with ensemble accompaniment. The title of this aria and the name of the accompanying ensemble are, unfortunately, unknown. The gaibanzi soloist is Ms. Chen Lili (陈力力), a young musician who also plays the jinghu (京胡). As is often the case in banhu performance, she also wears metal cylinders on three fingers of his left hand, which assist in the production of sliding tones. The gaibanzi resembles an erhu (二胡), but has a soundboard made from a thin piece of paulownia wood rather than python skin. Its sound resembles that of the better known coconut-bodied huqin called banhu (板胡), and, in this performance, is also reminiscent of the jinghu (京胡) used in Beijing opera accompaniment. Probably filmed in Chongqing, southwest China, c. July 11, 2024. The exact location and date of filming are unknown.
