This is a skill I love to teach my learners at Forest School, offering a chance to build perseverance, fine and gross motor skills, and confidence. I'm not a basket maker - the weaving lesson for me is about learning the process, not the resulting basket. This is a good thing to remind children if they find themselves feeling frustrated. If you keep the baskets small, this activity can be completed within an hour. To prep your brambles: 1. Try to collect lengths of the skinniest new growth you can. There are many bramble varieties - if you’ve found some with mega thorns, take a look around and you can often find different varieties with less thorns growing close to each other. Collect around 15 lengths of bramble. Strip off all the thorns, side-shoots and leaves using a thick pair of leather/suede gloves. 2. Leave the brambles to dry. I left mine for 4 days. You can see that they've dried when they go wrinkly. 3. Submerge the brambles in water overnight to soften again. 4. remove the brambles from the water and dry with an old towel. Collect, strip, dry and re-soak the bramble ahead of time to set the children up for success.
