We are back to talk about African culture and Xhosa heritage.Today we are looking at the Inqawe. The traditional Xhosa smoking pipe. We wear these pipes as part of our traditional attire when attending rituals or traditional functions. Pipe smoking is taken seriously in Xhosa culture, as pipe smoking is the oldest traditional form of smoking in the world. It is traditionally seen as a medicine to many and can be used to promote physical, spiritual, emotional and community well-being, especially when the smoke is not being inhaled. Tobacco can be used as an offering to the creator or to another person, place or being. The higher the status of the woman in the community, the longer the stem of her smoking pipe. Xhosa women can have pipes with stems that are up to 30 cm in length. The smoke from burned tobacco has a purpose of carrying thoughts and prayers to the spirit world or to the creator. Do you see any significance in the way tobacco is smoked? Does it make sense why our ancestors took up the pipe, and why it means something to use tobacco like our ancestors did?
