May God bless you and guide you as He has blessed and guided our beloved country since our founding.” This tradition started in 1989 when Reagan wrote a letter to his successor George H.W. Bush. These letters typically include advice, warnings, or observations about having the rarest and maybe the worst job in America. Here’s what others wrote: Bush 1 wrote Clinton that he never felt the loneliness some Presidents have described. Bill wrote Bush 2 that the burdens he now shoulders are great but often exaggerated. Bush 2 wrote to Obama that there will be rough patches but that the character and compassion of the American people will pull you out of them. Obama wrote to Trump that it’s a weird job, but that it’s important for Presidents to leave the instruments of our democracy at least as strong as they found them.
