From a special Christmas edition of the long-running BBC TV series “Songs of Praise”, broadcast on 21 December 1997 and featuring the choir of Peterborough Cathedral, directed by Christopher Gower. An arrangement of a Cornish carol with an interesting mix of pagan and Christian imagery. The melody and the first 3 verses were first transcribed in the 19th century from the singing of a villager in St. Day (also known as Sans Day) in the parish of Gwennap, Cornwall. Now the holly bears a berry as white as the milk, And Mary bore Jesus, all wrapped up in silk, And Mary bore Jesus Christ our Saviour for to be, And the first tree in the greenwood, it was the holly. Now the holly bears a berry as green as the grass, And Mary bore Jesus, who died on the cross. Refrain Now the holly bears a berry as black as the coal, And Mary bore Jesus, who died for us all. Refrain Now the holly bears a berry as blood is it red, And Mary bore Jesus who rose from the dead. Refrain
