11 Korean and Vietnam War Veterans Honored

A patriotic display remained in the sanctuary of Lakewood Baptist Church after Independence Day was over... but it wasn't an oversight. The decorations were there to honor 11 Korean and Vietnam war veterans in the congregation. The service was organized by Baptist International Missions, Inc., a group that travels the world holding ceremonies for service men and women. "We have a tendency as human beings to forget," said David Snyder, Director of BIMI. "This is a great way for us to remember what sacrifices have been made for us, so that we have the freedoms to do what we're able to do." These 11 men each had different experiences while serving. However, all of them felt gratitude toward the church and organization for recognizing the sacrifices they've made for this country. "I feel honored for all the folks here today and appreciate the pastor taking his time to recognize veterans today, too," says Herbert Conner. He served in the U.S. Army from 1947 to 1791. Another veteran told us his view of the holiday has changed throughout his life, especially after he served in the Korean War. Even though his childhood memories of July 4th are fond, he's especially proud of his service and his involvement protecting our freedoms. "As a child growing up, July 4th was very special, the fireworks and parade... but as we think more about it and realize what has been done for our country to preserve these freedoms, it is a great blessing," says Ferrell Kearney.
