We were challenged with creating a course that addresses the sensitive subject of an Active Attacker. It was important to find just the right balance between appropriate realism, learner engagement, and instruction. We used first-person video, shot on an iPhone, to provide an immersive experience for the learner in a way that tailored the realism for a global audience with diverse cultural norms. Key differences like the type of weapon used in the scenario, without actually ever seeing a weapon on-screen, balances the sense of urgency without overwhelming the learner. Throughout the course, the learner is forced to make decisions on what to do when faced with two kinds of an active attacker. The key factor throughout the training is the speed with which they react—an elapsed timer showing how long it takes to complete the course is compared with the mere minutes in which an Active Attacker situation typically occurs.
