Anti-ICE protesters share common goal, but tactics differ between Seattle and Portland

Images from Portland of protesters going toe-to-toe with federal agents haven’t been reflected as much in Seattle in recent weeks, despite activists in both cities pushing to abolish U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Portland became more a flashpoint after President Donald Trump ordered National Guard troops into the city, but a federal judge declared the deployment illegal even though some soldiers have already arrived. There has been a sustained and low-level protest outside the Portland ICE facility, but it's been less disruptive than the downtown clashes of 2020 when demonstrations erupted after George Floyd's killing. “What we're seeing is a really organic protesting of having anyone inside detention in Oregon,” said Josefina Mora-Cheung of La Resistencia, a grassroots group led by people who have been detained which also maintains ties with activists in Oregon. Local officials have suggested that many of the president's claims and social media posts about Portland appear to rely on images from 2020. Five years later, the city has reduced crime, and downtown has seen fewer homeless encampments and more foot traffic.
