"Sky King" is a nickname given to 29-year-old ground service operator Richard Russell after he stole a Horizon Air Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 airliner from the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (Sea-Tac) and died after crashing on Ketron Island in Puget Sound. I don't want this to resonate with me but it really does and it seems to resonate with a lot of other people. A great write up I saw: "I wanna talk about this. Because this is more than just "some dude stole a plane lmao." Richard "Skyking" Russell is the spirit of every person alive today in the West who has "that feeling," which really is all of us, whether we realize it or not. That feeling of hopelessness and lack of purpose, where one has no choice but to serve the machine and be extracted for their worth before they are discarded, with the only thing to show for their toils the benefit of others' bank accounts. No personal achievement. No fulfillment. Not even the feeling of being alive. But he made it. He got out. In a final act of glorious rebellion he slipped the surly bonds of Earth and the crushing weight of 21st Century life and took for himself the greatest freedom Man has ever known. His last moments were spent living Man's oldest dream, completely, utterly free. He soared through the skies, put out his hand, and touched the face of God. He is, without question, a folk hero on par with the greatest, and I'd even go so far as to say in some ways he became a Christlike figure as he died for our sins which created the very world that's crushing us. It is to me, unironically, one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen."
