"Four months in Olenivka, a year in Taganrog, 45 days in Donetsk pre-trial detention center, and a year in Makiyivka — behind these numbers and cities lie months of brutal interrogations, beatings, and torture that 25-year-old Azov soldier Dmitry, call sign Rasti, had to endure. "I’ve never taken as many hits to the head during my whole life of training as I did in 5 minutes at the 'reception' in Taganrog," says the Azov soldier. Dima was 20 when he joined the Azov reconnaissance unit. To get into the reconnaissance division, Rasti went through one of the toughest basic military training programs. On February 24, like most Azov fighters, the young man was in Mariupol. At that time, his unit was working as anti-tank defense. On April 15, Rasti ended up at Azovstal, and from there — in captivity for 2.5 years. "My comrades and I became a small percentage of people on the planet who have gone through this phase of life. Many people completely reassessed life after captivity," says Dmitry. Now, he is actively training and recovering to soon return to the front lines. "While being here in Kyiv, I constantly think about the guys who are still in captivity. Yesterday I thought about how people don't appreciate the freedom they have. They only start to appreciate it after it’s taken away from them. Many people don’t understand that everything can be taken from them. And now the Russians are doing this — taking territory, killing thousands of people. Many soldiers who went through captivity are motivated to go back. Not just because of defending the country and their loved ones, people have grown to hate the Russians even more," says Dima. Watch the full story of Azov soldier Rasti in the video from hromadske.
