A 2026 open source security report found that vulnerabilities increased by 107% in 2024. The report attributes the surge to larger, more complex codebases and suggests AI coding assistants may be accelerating the trend. AI tools allow more people to write more code, increasing overall volume and dependency chains across third-party libraries and APIs. More code means more attack surface. As AI-generated components become embedded inside layered applications—apps built on APIs built on other apps—risk compounds. This doesn’t just affect security posture; it can also complicate regulatory compliance and vendor risk management. The speed of development may be outpacing governance and review processes. If AI is dramatically increasing software output, are organizations investing equally in review, testing, and compliance—or are vulnerabilities scaling faster than defenses?
