When an artist creates a work of moving images, they typically have limited control over how that work is viewed, beholden to the rigidity of a movie theater or the vagaries of a viewer’s home television setup. Filmmaker Terence Nance spoke with us about the opportunities to experiment with film presentation in a gallery space for his solo exhibition "Terence Nance: Swarm," presented by @BlackStarProjects at @ICAPhiladelphia. The installation includes films viewed from rotating seats and reflected on water, nontraditional screen sizes and orientations, and personal artifacts. "Terence Nance: Swarm" is on view at the ICA through July 9, 2023. Filmed April 20, 2023 at the Institute of Contemporary Art at @penn. @terenceetc is an artist, musician, and filmmaker whose work includes the semi-animated feature An Oversimplification of Her Beauty, the Peabody Award-winning @HBO series "Random Acts of Flyness," and the genre-straddling 2022 album "V O R T E X." He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2014 and a United States Artist Fellowship in 2018. BlackStar Projects’ Terence Nance: Swarm, presented at the ICA, is the first solo exhibition of the artist’s interdisciplinary work. --- Subscribe to the "Pew Center for Arts & Heritage" Channel HERE: https://bit.ly/3pfhGqW Follow "Pew Center Arts" on Instagram HERE: https://bit.ly/3pbEsju Like "Pew Center Arts" on Facebook HERE: https://bit.ly/3rM9ccO Follow "Pew Center Arts" on Twitter HERE: https://bit.ly/3a92MhB Get the latest Fellows news, Questions of Practice videos, and upcoming Center-funded events.
