The world of volleyball recruiting is moving faster than a jump serve. Between shifting roster limits and the ever-evolving transfer portal, high school athletes often feel like they’re playing defense before the match even starts. To clear the air, we sat down with former college coach and NSR scout Sam Shomo to discuss what it actually takes to get noticed, recruited, and signed in today’s landscape. 1. The "Eye Test" vs. The Stat Sheet According to Coach Shomo, while stats matter, they aren't the whole story. Coaches are looking for "volleyball IQ" and grit. The Takeaway: Don’t just send a highlight reel of your best kills. Coaches want to see how you move after a mistake and how you communicate with your teammates during a timeout. 2. Navigating the New Roster Limits With recent NCAA changes, roster spots are more competitive than ever. Sam emphasizes that versatility is your best friend. If you can play six rotations or transition from middle to opposite, your value triples. 3. The Role of the Transfer Portal "The portal changed the timeline," says Shomo. Because coaches can now look for "proven" college talent, high schoolers need to be more proactive. You can't wait for them to find you; you have to put yourself in front of them with verified data and professional scouting. 4. Why Professional Scouting Matters Sam’s transition from coaching to NSR highlights a crucial gap: Communication. Coaches receive hundreds of emails a day. Having a scout like Sam vouch for your character and skill set acts as a "fast pass" to the top of a coach’s inbox. "Recruiting is a marathon, not a sprint. But you have to start running early if you want to finish at the top." — Coach Sam Shomo Looking for more recruiting tips?
