As per a recent directive from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), imports falling under specific categories (HSN Code 8471) will now face restrictions, except for those under baggage rules. The change could impact major companies like Apple, Samsung, and Acer, possibly compelling them to enhance their manufacturing and assembly processes within India. Depending on the implementation of licensing norms, this might also impact consumer prices. Certain exemptions have been outlined for laptop imports. One unit of a laptop, tablet, personal computer, or ultra-small form factor computer bought from the US, for instance, can be brought into India without limitations, but the user will be subject to applicable duties. These exemptions extend to both in-store purchases and units bought online from e-commerce platforms. Additionally, there is an exemption from import licensing for up to 20 items per consignment. However, the restrictions won't apply if the goods are intended for purposes like research and development, testing, benchmarking, evaluation, repair and return, and product development.
