Where is the longest distance between stations in Japan? I'll introduce it to you. If you know of any other lines with long distances between stations, please let me know in the comments. Please subscribe and like the channel! 00:10 JR East Yamada Line Kamimai-Kukai The Yamada Line is located entirely within Iwate Prefecture, connecting Morioka Station, the prefectural capital, with Miyako Station, the hub city of the coastal region. Why is this line called the Yamada Line? If you know the origin of the Yamada Line's name, please let me know in the comments! The Yamada Line is a remote line that is also said to be the most mountainous line in Tohoku, and runs through the most mountainous area in the Tohoku region. The Yamada Line, which runs alongside Iwate Mountain (2040.5m), the highest peak in Iwate, has a steep gradient of 25‰ and passes through many tunnels to cross Kabuto Myojin-dake (1005m), and it seems that when this line was planned, it was said, "Are you planning to let even monkeys ride on it?" The section between Kamiyonai Station and Kukai Station is where the watershed between Yanagawa River and Heigawa River, called Kukai Pass (751m), is located. In that deep mountain area, there used to be two intermediate stations, Oshida Station and Asagishi Station. They were built to function as switchback stations, but they were abolished in 2016 because the performance of the trains improved and the switchbacks were no longer necessary, and because there were few residents in both areas and there were few passengers. As a result, the section between Kamiyonai Station and Kukai Station became 25.7km. 01:13 Honshi-Bisan Line Kojima to Utazu The Honshi-Bisan Line is also called the Seto Ohashi Line, and connects Honshu and Shikoku. It is connected by the Seto Ohashi Bridge, and most of the roads between these stations are bridges. The Seto Ohashi Bridge is a collective term for multiple bridges that connect five islands. There are no stations because it runs over a bridge. The trains that run on this section are the Rapid Marine Liner, which connects to Takamatsu, the Shiokaze, which connects to Matsuyama, and the Nanpu, which connects to Kochi. Until the timetable change in March 2025, the Uzushio, which connects to Tokushima, ran there. The reason why the Uzushio was discontinued on this section has not been announced, but it is probably because access from Keihanshin is more convenient via express buses via the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge or the Nankai Ferry, and there were not many passengers on the Uzushio from Okayama. 02:01 JR Hokkaido Soya Main Line Oshima to Saku The Soya Main Line is a line that connects Asahikawa and Wakkanai in Hokkaido. The Oshima to Saku section is located near Otoineppu, a station where express trains stop and is known for its Otoineppu soba. The Soya Main Line runs along the Kamiji Valley of the Teshio River. Along the way, there was a village where pioneer farmers and railway employees lived, and Kamiji Station. Kamiji was an isolated island on land and could only be reached by train and ferry. The Kamiji Bridge was built connecting Kamiji with National Route 40 on the opposite side of the river, but it collapsed due to strong winds. After that, the residents decided to withdraw, and in 1967, the village became an abandoned village. As no one used it, the station became a signal station. So the distance between Oshima and Saku stations became 18.0 km. 2:42 JR Hokkaido Soya Main Line Yuchi to Minami Wakkanai The Soya Main Line is a line that connects Asahikawa to Nayoro and Wakkanai. It was built as a connecting railway to Sakhalin, which was once a Japanese territory. Between Yuchi Station and Minami Wakkanai Station was Nakukai Station. Nakukai Station was a station that JR Hokkaido was considering abolishing, but it will survive in 2021 under the maintenance and management of Wakkanai City. After that, the issue of whether to continue the line was raised many times, and finally, in March 2025, Nakukai Station was closed. This is how the distance between Yuuchi and Minami-Wakkanai stations became 20.0 km. 03:12 JR Hokkaido Soya Main Line Nukanan to Horonobe Like Oshima and Saku, this section of the Soya Main Line runs along the Teshio River. Stations along the way included Kami-Oshinnai, Oshinnai, Yasuushi, Minami-Horonobe, and Kami-Horonobe, but due to a decrease in users, they were closed one after another, and in March 2025, Oshinnai and Minami-Horonobe were closed. This is how the distance between Nukanan and Horonobe stations became 21.4 km. 03:35 JR Hokkaido Soya Main Line Bifuka - Teshiogawa Onsen This is also on the Soya Main Line, and in this section, Monponai Station was closed in March 2021, and Onnenai Station and Hatsuno Station were closed in March 2024. These stations were closed due to a decrease in users and difficulties for local governments to maintain the line. The Soya Main Line once played an important role in Hokkaido develo...
