The cough syrup tragedy continues to haunt Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, with the death toll rising to nine children. Three more deaths were confirmed in Chhindwara’s Parasia area, where contaminated Coldrif and Nextro-DS syrups are suspected. The syrups have been banned in Chhindwara pending investigation. In Rajasthan, officials clarified that two child deaths in Bharatpur and Sikar were unrelated to the government free medicine scheme. Authorities warn against self-medication and advise following strict prescription protocols. The Union Health Ministry has launched a multi-agency probe, after tests suggested the syrup may contain diethylene glycol, a toxic chemical harmful to kidneys. Authorities have banned the sale of Coldrif syrup in Tamil Nadu and frozen stocks at the manufacturer’s plant in Kancheepuram.
