Before I start, I found this statement on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affair of Japan on Japan’s basic position about the Rising Sun flag. ( https://www.mofa.go.jp/a_o/rp/page22e... ) I fully understand that this flag has been used as “good catch flags by fishermen, celebratory flags for childbirth and seasonal festivities, and flags of Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) vessels.” However I’ve also seen this flag in many war movies and war related documentary films. Even though the Chief Cabinet Secretary Suga said “Claims that the flag is an expression of political assertions or a symbol of militarism are absolutely false.”, “war” came into my mind impulsively. Many right wing people would say I’m just too ignorant and need to learn more. Yes maybe they are right that I am too ignorant and it may be true that I need to learn more. But it’s really difficult to learn what really happened in the past. Because a lot of historical “truth” has been conveniently distorted as the time goes by and there is always opposition against what is considered “truth”. But maybe I can’t blame anybody on this. Because, imagine a certain incident occurred one day that involves a few people including you. You look at it in your way but the guy next to you may feel it differently. One simple incident can be interpreted in as many ways as the number of people involved and this is how the distortion begins because human beings are emotional creatures. We need to look at things objectively but when a lot of people are involved and a lot of time has passed, things get out of controls and it’s hard to tell objectively what really happened from nobody’s perspective. Under such situations general people can be easily controlled by a few powerful people who want to take advantage of this obscure history. Anyway my point is that it’s really hard to come close to the truth in the past now. What we can do today is to choose who to trust. On the Rising Sun flag, I have’t been able to find anybody I can trust yet. Twitter: / vsv_japan
